Etsy fees explained (with a calculator)

By the Chatbait team ·

Short answer: Etsy charges US sellers a $0.20 listing fee per item, a 6.5% transaction fee on the order total, and a payment processing fee of 3% plus $0.25 per order. Some sellers also pay an Offsite Ads fee of 12% or 15%, and it can be mandatory. Add these up and a typical sale loses 12% to 20% of its price to fees, before any ads.

What Etsy charges every seller

Two fees apply to almost every listing and sale.

The listing fee is $0.20 per listing, and you pay it whether the item sells or not. Etsy's fee guide says this fee "is charged regardless of whether or not the item listed sells." If you list a variation that sells more than one at a time, or a listing auto-renews after it sells, each of those also costs $0.20.

The transaction fee is 6.5%, and it covers more than the item price. Etsy charges 6.5% of the item price, the shipping you charge the buyer, and any gift wrap fee. It does not apply to sales tax that Etsy collects on your behalf.

So a $20 item with $4 shipping has a transaction fee on $24, the full amount the buyer pays. That catches sellers who price shipping high to make the item look cheap.

Payment processing fees for US sellers

On top of the transaction fee, Etsy takes a cut for handling the payment itself. For US sellers this is 3% plus $0.25 per order, shown in Etsy's own fee table as "United States | 3% + 0.25 USD." This rate is different in other countries, so a seller in the UK or Canada will see a different number.

Etsy describes this fee as a percentage of the total sale price plus a flat charge per order. In plain terms: every single order costs you a quarter before you've sold anything, then 3% of whatever the buyer paid.

This isn't legal or tax advice. Your own accounting (what counts as income, what you can deduct) is a separate question from what Etsy deducts at the point of sale.

Offsite Ads: the fee you might not choose

Offsite Ads are ads Etsy runs for your listings on Google, Facebook, Instagram, and other sites. You only pay when a shopper clicks one of those ads and buys within 30 days.

Whether you can turn this off depends on your sales. Etsy's help center says shops that have never made $10,000 in sales in any rolling 365 days can opt out. Those shops pay a 15% fee on any order an ad brings in. Once a shop crosses $10,000 in trailing sales, Etsy enrolls it automatically at a lower 12% fee, and the shop must stay enrolled for as long as it exists.

The fee rate drops once you're enrolled, but you lose the choice to turn ads off.

Currency conversion and regulatory fees

If your shop's listing currency differs from the currency of your Etsy Payment account, you'll pay a 2.5% currency conversion fee on the sale amount. Etsy takes this out before the money reaches your account, according to Etsy's currency conversion help page. Most US sellers listing and getting paid in US dollars won't see this at all.

Some countries charge a separate regulatory operating fee on top of the fees above. Etsy's main fee overview page lists every current US fee by name and does not mention a regulatory operating fee, so it does not appear to apply to US sellers.

Work out your fees

Numbers are easier to trust when you can plug in your own price and shipping cost. Use the calculator below with the rates above already built in.

A worked example: $30 item, $5 shipping

Say you sell an item for $30 with $5 shipping, so the buyer pays $35 total. Here's the math, using the fees above and no Offsite Ads:

  • Listing fee: $0.20 (flat, paid when you listed it)
  • Transaction fee: 6.5% of $35 = $2.28
  • Payment processing: 3% of $35, plus $0.25 = $1.05 + $0.25 = $1.30
  • Total fees: about $3.78
  • Net to you: about $31.22

That's roughly 11% of the $35 sale gone to fees, including the listing fee. If this order came from an Offsite Ad at the 15% rate, add about $5.25 more, dropping your net to around $25.97.

Why this matters for pricing

If you price items without accounting for these fees, a sale can bring in less than it looks like. A common fix: decide what you need to earn per item, then work backward to a price that still covers Etsy's cut. This matters most for low-margin items, where a few percent swings whether you made money at all. See how to calculate profit margin for a simple way to check that math before you set a price.

Shipping price also feeds the transaction fee, so charging real shipping costs (rather than folding them into the item price) changes what you owe. If you're still writing your shipping policy, it's worth deciding how you'll price shipping with these fees in mind.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Etsy really take from a sale?

For a typical US sale with no ads, expect around 10% to 12% of the order total in transaction and payment processing fees, plus the $0.20 listing fee. Add Offsite Ads and it can reach 20% or more on that order.

Is the Offsite Ads fee avoidable?

Only if your shop has never made $10,000 in sales in any rolling 365-day period. After that, Etsy enrolls you automatically and you can't opt out, though the rate drops from 15% to 12%.

Does the transaction fee apply to shipping and gift wrap?

Yes. Etsy's 6.5% transaction fee applies to the item price, the shipping you charge the buyer, and any gift wrap fee.

Do US sellers pay a regulatory operating fee?

Based on Etsy's published fee overview, no. That overview lists every current fee for US sellers and does not include a regulatory operating fee.

Will these numbers change?

Yes. Etsy has changed its fees before, and rates can differ by country. Check the linked Etsy help pages for the current numbers before you rely on them for pricing.
