Holiday shipping deadlines 2026: USPS, UPS and FedEx

By the Chatbait team ·

Short answer: for a gift to arrive by Christmas Day (December 25, 2026), USPS recommends shipping Priority Mail by December 18 and Ground Advantage by December 17. UPS recommends its services for delivery by December 24, with 3 Day Select by December 21. FedEx has published full 2026 dates too, with Ground between December 17 and 23 depending on how far the parcel travels. These are the carriers' own recommendations, not guarantees, so set your own cutoff a few days earlier.

2026 ship-by dates for US carriers

These are the recommended dates to ship by for delivery before Christmas. USPS targets December 25. UPS and FedEx target December 24, since both are closed on Christmas Day.

For Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico and US territories, USPS Ground Advantage takes longer and varies by distance. First-Class Mail, Priority Mail and Priority Mail Express keep the same dates as above. Check usps.com for your destination.

FedEx Ground and Home Delivery deadlines depend on how far the package travels: 4-day transit by December 18, 3-day by December 21, 2-day by December 22, and 1-day by December 23. FedEx SameDay can go out as late as December 24. See the full FedEx table for your lane.

UPS Ground has no single nationwide date. It depends on where the package starts and ends, so UPS asks shippers to check its Calculate Time and Cost tool instead of publishing one date, according to the UPS 2026 Year-End Holiday Schedule.

Both USPS and UPS call these recommended dates, not guaranteed delivery. The USPS release describes them as "recommended" mailing dates, and UPS titles its table "Recommended Last Days to Ship." Weather, volume and your own handoff time can all push a package past the window.

Why you should set your own cutoff, earlier than the carrier's

Carrier dates assume a package leaves your hands and starts moving on that exact day. In a real small store, orders sit for a few hours or a day before you pack them, and a courier pickup might not come until the next morning. Add a buffer:

  • Set your store cutoff 2 to 4 days before the carrier's ship-by date. If USPS Priority Mail's date is December 18, tell customers your cutoff for Priority shipping is December 15 or 16.
  • Avoid weekends. If your cutoff lands on a weekend, move it to the Friday before.
  • Separate your cutoff by shipping speed, the same way the carriers do. A customer paying for express shipping should get a later cutoff than one paying for the cheapest option.

Show the cutoff where people buy

A date buried in your shipping policy won't stop a December 23 order with standard shipping. Put the cutoff where people decide to buy:

  • A banner across the top of your site.
  • A line on the product page, next to the price.
  • A line in the cart and at checkout.

See the shipping policy template for the full policy page, and the return policy template for what to say about gift returns.

Email to send once your cutoff has passed

When a customer orders after your cutoff, tell them before they ask.

Subject: About your order and Christmas delivery Hi [Customer name], Thanks for your order from [Store name]. You placed it on [date], after our cutoff for delivery by December 25. Your order is still on its way and should arrive by [new estimated date], based on [carrier]'s current shipping times. If you need something sooner, here are two options: - A [digital gift card], delivered by email right away. - [Local pickup] at [address], available until [date]. Reply to this email if you'd like to switch to one of these, or if you have any questions. [Your name] [Store name]

What to offer after the cutoff

Don't just stop selling. Offer alternatives that don't depend on a carrier:

  • Digital gift cards. Delivered by email in minutes, no shipping involved.
  • Digital products, if you sell any: downloads, guides, printable gift certificates.
  • Local pickup, if you have a location or can arrange to meet nearby.
  • A dated promise. If a product genuinely won't arrive by December 25, say so plainly on the product page rather than let the customer find out after paying.

Frequently asked questions

What is the last day to ship USPS Priority Mail for Christmas 2026?

December 18, 2026, according to USPS. This is a recommendation, not a guarantee.

What is the UPS cutoff for Christmas 2026?

UPS recommends shipping 3 Day Select by December 21, 2nd Day Air by December 22, and Next Day Air by December 23, for delivery by December 24. UPS Ground has no single date; check ups.com/ctc for your route.

When is the Royal Mail Christmas 2026 posting deadline?

2nd Class by December 18, 1st Class by December 21, and Special Delivery Guaranteed by December 23, according to Royal Mail.

Should my store's cutoff be the same as the carrier's date?

No. Set your own cutoff a few days before the carrier's date, so you have time to pack the order and hand it to the carrier before their deadline.

What should I do with orders placed after my cutoff?

Tell the customer right away with an updated delivery estimate, and offer a faster option: a digital gift card, a digital product, or local pickup.
