Packing slip template, and how to edit it in Shopify

By the Chatbait team ·

Short answer: a packing slip is a plain sheet you put inside a shipment that lists what's in the box, with no prices and no bill. Include the order number, the customer's shipping address, each item and quantity, and your return instructions. Shopify lets you print packing slips from the order page or in bulk, and you can edit the layout with the free Order Printer app.

What a packing slip is

A packing slip is a short document you print and put inside a package. It tells the customer, and anyone handling the box in a warehouse, exactly what should be inside. It has no prices and no payment details.

Shoppers use it to check their order arrived complete. Warehouse staff use it to match items against the order before sealing the box.

Packing slip vs invoice

These two documents often get mixed up, but they do different jobs.

Shopify can print both from the same order page, and calls one of its features "print packing slips and invoices" for exactly this reason, according to Shopify's printing orders guide.

What to include on a packing slip

  • Your store name and logo
  • Order number and order date
  • Shipping address (not billing address)
  • Each item, its variant (size, colour) and quantity
  • A short note on how to return the item
  • A thank you line

Leave off: prices, discount codes, payment method, and your supplier's name if you use a dropshipper or fulfillment partner.

How to print packing slips in Shopify

Shopify's order management includes built-in packing slip printing. You can print one packing slip from an order's details page, or select several orders from your orders list and print their packing slips together, according to Shopify's packing slips guide.

To print one slip: open the order, then use the print packing slip option on the order details page. To print several at once: select the orders you want from your orders list, then choose bulk printing.

How to edit the packing slip template in Shopify

Shopify's default packing slip is plain. To change its layout, wording or branding, you have two options, both described in Shopify's packing slips guide and Shopify's Order Printer guide:

  1. Edit the Liquid code directly. Shopify's packing slip layout, styling and the data it shows are controlled through Liquid code, according to the same guide. This suits someone comfortable editing code, or your theme developer.
  2. Use the free Order Printer app. Shopify Order Printer lets you "print and customize invoices, packing slips, pick lists, and other documents," and templates are built with HTML, CSS and Liquid code in the app's own editor. Shopify notes that "Shopify Theme Support can help you with minor customizations," while bigger redesigns usually need a developer.

If you just want your logo and a different return note, Order Printer's editor is the simpler route. If you want a different layout entirely, expect to touch Liquid code or hire help.

Frequently asked questions

Does a packing slip need to show prices?

No. A packing slip is for checking contents, not billing. Leave out prices, discounts and payment details; that information belongs on an invoice or receipt.

Can I print packing slips for several orders at once in Shopify?

Yes. Select the orders on your orders list and print them together, instead of opening each order one at a time, according to Shopify's packing slips guide.

What's the easiest way to add my logo to a Shopify packing slip?

Install the free Order Printer app and edit the template in its built-in editor, rather than editing Liquid code by hand.

Should I put a return policy note on the packing slip?

Yes. A short line pointing to your returns page or support email, inside the box, answers a common question before the customer has to search for it or email you.
