Shopify conversion rate benchmarks (2026)
By the Chatbait team ·
Short answer: benchmark reports don't agree on a single number, because they sample different stores. Littledata's October 2026 panel of 427 Shopify stores puts the median session-to-order conversion rate at 1.4%, with the top 10% of stores at 3.6%. IRP Commerce, whose panel skews toward UK small and mid-sized merchants, measured 1.97% across all its tracked stores in September 2026, up from 1.68% a year earlier. Treat any single "average conversion rate" figure as a rough guide, not a target, and compare yourself to stores in your own category where you can.
Figures below come from each source's own published page, opened directly, checked October 21, 2026.
The formula, with a worked example
Conversion rate = orders ÷ sessions × 100.
Example: a store gets 1,000 sessions in a week and completes 14 orders in that time. 14 ÷ 1,000 × 100 = 1.4%.
A session counts a visit, not a visitor, so one shopper browsing twice in a day can count as two sessions. This is why the same store can report different conversion rates depending on whether it's measuring by session or by unique visitor.
Why the reports disagree
- Littledata tracks 427 Shopify stores specifically, over a 90-day window (July 13 to October 10, 2026), each with at least 1,000 sessions and 90 purchases in that window, according to Littledata's Shopify benchmark page, generated October 14, 2026 per that page. Littledata sells Shopify analytics and tracking tools, so it has an interest in this data looking credible to the merchants it sells to; the methodology is disclosed on the same page.
- IRP Commerce reports session conversion rate (transactions ÷ sessions) from "first-party operational trading data recorded within the IRP platform", a panel weighted toward UK small and mid-sized merchants, according to IRP Commerce's ecommerce market data page, checked October 21, 2026, showing September 2026 data. IRP Commerce also sells an ecommerce platform, so its panel is drawn from its own customers, not the market as a whole.
Neither panel is "all of Shopify" or "all of ecommerce". Use the one closer to your store's size and region, and watch the trend over time more than the absolute number.

Broader ecommerce benchmark (IRP Commerce, September 2026)
Overall session conversion rate was 1.97% in September 2026, up from 1.68% in September 2025, a 17.25% year-over-year increase. By sector: arts and crafts 5.76%, health and wellbeing 2.83%, kitchen and home appliances 2.59%, sports and recreation 1.90%, fashion clothing and accessories 1.62%, pet care 2.13%, food and drink 1.28%, toys, games and collectables 1.07%, cars and motorcycling 1.76%, baby and child 0.44% (IRP Commerce, checked October 21, 2026).
Device: desktop converts higher than mobile
Shopify's own blog, citing a Contentsquare 2026 report, gives a desktop conversion rate of 3.4% against 2% on mobile, even though mobile makes up roughly 70% of ecommerce traffic (Shopify blog, "Mobile vs. desktop conversion rates", published August 10, 2026, checked October 21, 2026). This is a general ecommerce figure, not Shopify-specific, and Littledata's own page didn't break out device-level rates in the data checked for this post.
What to do with these numbers
- Compare your store to its own category (Littledata's industry breakdown), not the overall average.
- Watch your own trend month over month more closely than any single external benchmark.
- If mobile converts noticeably lower than desktop for you, check whether mobile shoppers are abandoning at a specific step, like checkout or a product question going unanswered. An AI agent like Chatbait that answers sizing, shipping and policy questions directly from your own pages can remove some of that friction, though it won't fix a slow page or a broken checkout.
Frequently asked questions
What's a good conversion rate for a Shopify store?
There's no single number. Littledata's October 2026 data puts the median at 1.4%, with the top 10% of stores at 3.6%, and your own category matters more than the overall figure, according to Littledata, checked October 21, 2026.
How do I calculate my store's conversion rate?
Divide orders by sessions and multiply by 100. For example, 14 orders from 1,000 sessions is 1.4%.
Why do different conversion rate reports give different numbers?
They sample different stores. Littledata's panel is 427 Shopify stores; IRP Commerce's panel skews toward UK small and mid-sized merchants on its own platform. Neither represents "all of ecommerce", so treat each as a directional benchmark, not an absolute truth.
Does mobile convert worse than desktop?
In the data checked for this post, yes: a Contentsquare 2026 report cited by Shopify's blog found desktop converting at 3.4% against 2% on mobile, even though mobile accounts for most traffic.
