Shopify payout schedule: when you get paid, and delays
By the Chatbait team ·
Short answer: Shopify pays out based on your settlement time, which depends on your region, risk level and payment method, then groups weekend sales into one payout. You can set your schedule to daily, weekly or monthly in Settings > Payments. A payout can show as scheduled, deposited or failed, and your whole account can go on hold if Shopify needs more information or your bank details are wrong.

How Shopify payout timing works
Shopify Payments pays out on a settlement time, not a fixed number of days for everyone. Shopify Help Center says "the minimum settlement time depends on your region, risk level, and the payment method used." Once a payout leaves Shopify, it can take your bank an extra 1 to 3 days to show the money, because banks add their own processing time (Shopify Help Center).
Settlement only counts business days. Weekends and holidays don't count, and all the money from Friday, Saturday and Sunday sales is grouped into one payout (Shopify Help Center). So a sale on Saturday doesn't start its clock until Monday.
Settlement time also differs by country. Shopify's help page gives a few examples: Australia settles in 2 business days, several European countries settle in 3 business days, Japan in 5 business days and Mexico in 7 business days (Shopify Help Center). If your country isn't one of these, check the linked page directly, since Shopify sets the exact number by region.
If your payout destination is Shopify Balance instead of a bank account, money can land within 1 business day of the sale, which Shopify says can be "up to 7 days earlier than a bank." New merchants using Balance can still take up to 5 business days for their first payouts (Shopify Help Center).
What each payout status means
Shopify's help page on lower or missing payouts names three statuses a payout can have:
- Scheduled: the payout "is being processed and has been batched together with other transactions."
- Deposited: the payout "has been sent to your bank," and it can take the bank 1 to 3 business days to show the funds.
- Failed: the payout "couldn't be processed due to issues with your bank account."
There's also a separate, account-wide status: an account hold. This is a hold on your whole Shopify Payments account, not on one payout. Shopify says "you can still use your Shopify store when your Shopify Payments account is on hold," but no payouts go out until the hold is cleared (Shopify Help Center).
Why a payout fails or gets held
A failed payout almost always comes down to your bank details. Shopify lists the common causes as an incorrect account number, incorrect bank details, or a closed account, and also flags a mismatch between the payee name on the payout and the name on the bank account (Shopify Help Center). A single failure can trigger an immediate hold, or a hold after several failures in a row (Shopify Help Center).
To fix a failed payout, go to the Payouts page in your Shopify admin and update your bank account, then retry the payout. Shopify's own instruction is to "update your bank account information and retry the payout" (Shopify Help Center).
An account-wide hold is different from a failed payout and usually needs more from you than fixing a bank number. Shopify's advice is to give it any information it has asked for, and to reply directly to its email (Shopify Help Center). Check your Shopify admin notifications and your inbox for that email, and reply there rather than starting a new support ticket.
Why a payout is lower than you expected
Before you assume a payout is missing, check whether it's just smaller than you expected. Shopify's help page lists several things that reduce a payout:
| Reason | What it does |
|---|---|
| Refunds | Deducted from your next available payout |
| Chargebacks | Payment amount and dispute fees are deducted |
| Reserves | Money held back temporarily against possible losses |
| Processing fees | Deducted from each transaction |
| Currency conversion | Applies if you're paid in a different currency than you sold in |
| Negative balance | Reduces your next payout to cover it |
Chargebacks are a common cause of a smaller payout. If you're dealing with one, see how to respond to a Shopify chargeback.
How to change your payout schedule
You can choose daily, weekly or monthly payouts. One exception: merchants in Japan "can choose a weekly or monthly payouts schedule, but can't have a daily payouts schedule" (Shopify Help Center).
To change it:
- In your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Payments.
- Click Manage under the Shopify Payments section.
- Under Payouts schedule, pick daily, weekly or monthly. For weekly, also pick the day.
- Turn on an email notification for each payout, if you want one.
- Click Save.
(Steps from Shopify Help Center)
One thing to plan around: switching schedules delays payouts that were already pending. If you move from one payout schedule to another, any pending payout is delayed until the next payout date under your new schedule (Shopify Help Center). Don't change your schedule the same week you're expecting a payout.
What to check when a payout is late
Go through these before contacting support:
- Check the payout's status on the Payouts page in your admin (scheduled, deposited or failed).
- Count business days only. Weekends and holidays don't count toward settlement time, and weekend sales are grouped into one payout.
- Check for an account hold banner in your admin or an email from Shopify asking for information.
- Confirm your bank account number, name on the account and currency are all correct.
- Check your Shopify Payments balance for refunds, chargebacks or a reserve that could explain a smaller or missing payout.
- Confirm you didn't just change your payout schedule, which delays any payout that was already pending.

Frequently asked questions
How long does a Shopify payout take?
It depends on your settlement time, which Shopify sets by region, risk level and payment method. Shopify gives examples of 2 business days for Australia, 3 for several European countries, 5 for Japan and 7 for Mexico, plus 1 to 3 extra days for your bank to show the funds (Shopify Help Center).
What does "scheduled" mean for a payout?
It means the payout is being processed and has been grouped with other transactions, but hasn't been sent to your bank yet (Shopify Help Center).
Why is my whole account on hold instead of just one payout?
An account hold blocks all payouts until you resolve it, usually by giving Shopify information it has asked for. Your store keeps working while it's on hold, only the money is paused (Shopify Help Center).
Can I switch from monthly to daily payouts?
Yes, in most countries, through Settings > Payments > Manage. The one documented exception is Japan, where daily payouts aren't offered (Shopify Help Center). Switching schedules delays any payout that was already pending.
Why was my payout smaller than expected?
Refunds, chargebacks, reserves, processing fees, currency conversion and a negative balance can all reduce a payout (Shopify Help Center).
