Shopify sales tax: what small US stores must collect
By the Chatbait team ·
Short answer: Shopify can calculate and collect sales tax at checkout once you tell it which states to collect in, but it does not decide where you owe tax, and it does not file or pay your tax returns for you unless you turn on Shopify Tax's automated filing. You have to register with each state first. This isn't tax or legal advice. Check with an accountant or your local tax authority for your situation.
Facts last checked on October 18, 2026, against the sources linked below.
What "sales tax nexus" means
Nexus is the legal word for "enough connection to a state that you owe its tax." There are two kinds.
Physical nexus means you have a real presence somewhere: an office, a store, a warehouse, or employees, according to Shopify's own guide (Shopify Help Center).
Economic nexus means you sold enough into a state, even with no physical presence there. This came from a 2018 US Supreme Court case, South Dakota v. Wayfair, which let states require online sellers to collect tax based on the volume or value of sales into a state (Shopify Help Center).
Economic nexus rules apply "whether or not you have physical nexus there" (Shopify Help Center). So a small store with no office or staff can still owe tax in a state, purely from sales there.
Economic nexus thresholds by state (2026)
Each state sets its own dollar (and sometimes transaction count) threshold. These change, so check the state's own page before you decide you're under the limit. Here is what each state's revenue department states today for a remote seller with no physical presence:
| State | Threshold | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Texas | $500,000 in Texas revenue in the preceding 12 months | Texas Comptroller |
| Florida | $100,000 in taxable remote sales in the previous calendar year | Florida Department of Revenue |
| Illinois | $100,000 in gross receipts OR 200 separate transactions in 12 months | Illinois Department of Revenue |
| Washington | More than $100,000 in combined gross receipts sourced to Washington | Washington Department of Revenue |
| North Carolina | Gross sales over $100,000 sourced to North Carolina | North Carolina Department of Revenue |
A few other large states (California, New York, Pennsylvania, Georgia) couldn't be confirmed from their own current pages while writing this, so they're left out rather than guessed. Check your own state's revenue department site directly, since thresholds and rules are updated often.
What Shopify actually does with sales tax
Here is what Shopify's own help pages say, directly:
- Shopify calculates and collects tax at checkout, once you set it up. Shopify's tax page says tax is your responsibility, and that Shopify doesn't remit or file your taxes for you unless you use Shopify Tax and set up automated filing (Shopify Help Center). Collecting and filing are two different things, and Shopify only does the second if you turn it on.
- You still have to register yourself. Shopify's guide says merchants must register their business with their local or federal tax authority before collecting (Shopify Help Center).
- Shopify Tax is Shopify's built-in tax calculation service, covering the United States, European Union, United Kingdom, and Canada (Shopify Help Center). For stores created before May 13, 2026, it's free until you pass $100,000 in sales in a year; after that, US stores pay 0.35% per order (0.25% on Shopify Plus), capped at $0.99 per order and $5,000 per region a year. Stores created on or after that date get a $100,000 lifetime free threshold instead, with no $5,000 regional cap (Shopify Help Center).
- Marketplace note: the facilitator rules are different if you also sell on Etsy or Amazon. Those marketplaces collect and remit tax on their own sales under marketplace facilitator laws. Your own Shopify store is not a marketplace, so that collection duty stays with you, through Shopify's calculation tools plus your own registrations and filings.
How to add a state registration in Shopify
In your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Taxes and duties. Shopify's setup guide lays out three steps: "Determine where you have an obligation to collect tax," "Register with the appropriate state or country," then add that registration so Shopify can "start to collect tax in each state or country" (Shopify Help Center).
Where to find your tax report
Shopify's United States Sales Tax report "provides a detailed summary of sales and tax information for orders in the United States," broken down by state and jurisdiction, under Analytics in your admin (Shopify Help Center). There's also a simpler Taxes report that summarizes tax applied to your sales.
Step by step: getting set up
- Check where you have nexus. Start with any state where you have an office, storage, or staff (physical nexus). Then check your sales totals against each state's economic nexus threshold.
- Register with that state before you start collecting. Collecting tax without being registered is its own problem; register first.
- Add the registration in Shopify under Settings > Taxes and duties, so Shopify starts calculating that state's tax at checkout.
- File on the state's own schedule. Most states file monthly, quarterly, or annually, based on your sales volume. Shopify Tax can file automatically if you turn that on; otherwise you file yourself using the tax report.
What to keep track of
- Which states you're registered in, and your filing frequency for each.
- Your running sales total per state, so you notice before you cross a new threshold.
- Filing deadlines (they differ by state and by how often you file).
- Any product categories taxed differently (clothing, digital goods, food are common exceptions).
Selling outside the US
If you ship to the UK or EU, different rules apply.
UK: you must register for VAT once your taxable turnover passes £90,000 in the last 12 months, or if you expect to pass it in the next 30 days (gov.uk).
EU: the One Stop Shop (OSS) lets you register for VAT in one EU country and use that single registration to cover VAT on cross-border sales to customers across the whole EU, instead of registering in every country you sell into (European Commission).
Selling into other countries (Canada, India, Australia) has its own tax rules, like India's GST. Check your destination country's rules with an accountant before you treat this guide as covering them.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to collect sales tax on Shopify?
Only in states where you have nexus, either physical (an office, warehouse, or staff) or economic (you crossed that state's sales threshold). Shopify doesn't decide this for you; you have to check it.
Does Shopify automatically collect sales tax?
Shopify calculates and collects tax at checkout, but only in the states or regions you've set up and registered for. It won't start collecting in a new state on its own.
Does Shopify pay sales tax for me?
No, not by default. Shopify says plainly that tax is your responsibility and it doesn't file or remit for you unless you turn on Shopify Tax's automated filing (Shopify Help Center).
What is Shopify's sales tax report?
It's a built-in report under Analytics that breaks down sales and tax collected by state and jurisdiction, useful when you sit down to file a return.
How do economic nexus thresholds work?
Each state sets its own sales total (and sometimes a transaction count) that triggers a duty to register and collect, based on the 2018 Wayfair decision. Thresholds vary by state and can change, so check the state's own page.
