Instagram auto-reply messages for creators and shops
By the Chatbait team ·
Short answer: Instagram gives business and creator accounts two built-in tools for faster replies: saved replies (a shortcut that fills in a message you've written before) and FAQs (up to four questions shown to people who message you, with an optional automated answer). Below are both setup steps and more than 15 ready-to-copy messages for the DMs creators get most: price questions, shipping, brand deal requests, "link in bio", time off, and order follow-ups.

How do saved replies work on Instagram
Saved replies turn a message you've written into a shortcut. Per Instagram's help page on professional inbox features, you hold down a message you've sent, tap More, then Save, and pick a short keyword. Next time, type the keyword and tap the chat icon that appears, and Instagram fills in the full message.
Saved replies only work on business and creator accounts, in the Instagram mobile app. If your account is still personal, switch it to a business or creator account first, then save the templates further down this page.
How do you set up FAQs in Instagram DMs
FAQs are different from saved replies. Instead of you typing a shortcut, Instagram shows up to four questions to the person messaging you. They tap one instead of typing, and you can add an automatic answer to each. Like saved replies, FAQs are only for business and creator accounts.
To set it up, Instagram's setup guide gives these steps:
- Tap Messages at the bottom.
- Tap the more options icon and then tap Tools.
- Under Tools, tap Frequently asked questions.
- Tap the toggle next to "Show questions" to turn on automated responses.
- Under Questions, tap Add question.
- Enter a question and an optional automated response for each one, then tap Save.
You can add up to four questions. If someone taps a question, their message lands in your Requests folder, and you still need to accept it before you can reply, even if an automated answer was already sent.
What about away messages and AI auto-replies
Instagram does not currently have a dedicated help page for a simple "away message" or "instant reply" toggle like some other messaging apps offer. The closest official tool is AI auto-replies, which lets a creator's AI respond to DMs while they are away. According to Instagram's AI auto-replies help page, this needs three things first: a professional account, a creator AI already built with Meta AI Studio, and agreeing to the Instagram Creator AI Terms. Once set up, you choose who it replies to: anyone you don't follow, followers you don't follow back, or only people you choose. This is a bigger setup than saved replies or FAQs, so most small shops are better served by those two first.

What are Meta's rules on messaging people
Meta sets limits on when a business can message someone, separate from Instagram's own feature pages. Meta's Messenger Platform and IG Messaging API policy explains a "standard messaging window": for most actions, a business has 24 hours to respond after a person messages first, and messages sent in that window may include promotional content. The same page describes a separate rule, the Human Agent tag, which lets a business reply manually for up to 7 days after the window closes, but only for a human agent resolving an issue, not for automated messages.
This policy is written for the Messenger Platform and Instagram Messaging API (the business tools companies build on), rather than for someone manually using saved replies in the Instagram app. It is also not legal advice. If messaging rules matter for your business, read the full policy page and check with Meta's own support channels before you rely on it.
Which tool fits a small shop or creator
Start with saved replies if you only need to answer the same question fast, by hand. Add FAQs if you want Instagram to show common questions and optionally answer them before you even open the chat. AI auto-replies is worth the extra setup only if you already send a high volume of DMs and have time to build out a creator AI in Meta AI Studio. For most small shops, saved replies plus FAQs cover the daily DM load without that extra setup.
Chatbait does not work inside Instagram DMs; it answers questions on your own website, so it is only useful if your Instagram bio link goes to a site you own.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a business account to use saved replies on Instagram?
Yes. Instagram's help page states this feature is only available for business and creator accounts on the mobile app.
How many FAQ questions can I show in Instagram DMs?
Up to four. You can write your own questions and answers, or use the ones Instagram suggests based on your account type.
Does Instagram have a simple away message like other apps?
Not as a dedicated feature right now. The closest official option is AI auto-replies, which needs a creator AI built with Meta AI Studio.
Is there a time limit on replying to Instagram DMs?
Not for replies you type yourself in the app. Tools that send messages through Meta's messaging API have a standard 24 hour window after the person's last message, with narrower rules after that.
