Does a chat widget slow down your Shopify store

By the Chatbait team ·

Short answer: a chat widget can slow your store down, but how much depends entirely on the widget, not on the idea of chat itself. Independent testing found some tools add well under a second to load, while others take close to 10 seconds before the chat bubble even shows up. Pick a lightweight widget that loads after your page content, and the speed cost is small enough to ignore.

What DebugBear actually measured

DebugBear tested chat widgets with Google's Lighthouse tool on an identical test page, measuring download size, how long each widget's JavaScript takes to run, and how long until the chat bubble becomes visible. The article was most recently updated November 10, 2025.

The spread between widgets was large:

WidgetDownload sizeJS execution timeTime until chat visible
Zoho Desk67 KB259 ms3.3 sec
LiveAgent79 KB309 ms2.5 sec
Zendesk533 KB991 ms9.3 sec
FreshChat564 KB361 ms2.8 sec
Tawk.to749 KB645 ms3.5 sec

A few more specific numbers from the article: LiveAgent and MyLiveChat "both require less than 100KB of data." Tawk.to's download size is "dominated by a single 500KB SVG image," which explains why it's heavy despite being a simple widget. Zendesk "downloads over 500KB of JavaScript code, or 2.3MB after unzipping," and "takes almost a second of CPU time" to run; DebugBear also notes Kayako and Zendesk "both take almost 10s" before the chat widget becomes visible.

Why most chat widgets don't hurt your Core Web Vitals much

A well-built chat widget loads asynchronously: the browser renders your page's text, images and buttons first, then fetches and runs the chat widget's code in the background. That's consistent with the widgets above not blocking initial render, even the heavier ones. The risk is less about your page looking slow and more about:

  • Total page weight. Tawk.to's roughly 700 KB of downloads is close to the size of several product photos. On a slow mobile connection, that adds up.
  • JavaScript execution time. A script that takes close to a second to run, like Zendesk's, can briefly make a page feel sluggish to scroll or tap, even after it's visually loaded.
  • How long before the bubble is clickable. A shopper who wants to ask something right away may give up before a widget that takes 9 to 10 seconds to appear, like Zendesk or Kayako in this test, even if the rest of the page loaded fine.

A short checklist before you add one

  • Load it async or deferred, never as a blocking script in <head>. See how to add a chatbot to WordPress, Wix, Webflow and more for where that script goes on each platform.
  • Check the download size, not just the marketing page. A widget at roughly 700 KB and one under 100 KB can look identical to a shopper, but one costs your page far more bandwidth.
  • Test with your own Lighthouse report, before and after adding the script, using Chrome's DevTools or PageSpeed Insights. Numbers from a blank test page won't exactly match your real product pages.
  • Limit it to the pages that need it, if your platform allows that, rather than loading it on every page including ones with heavy image galleries already competing for bandwidth.
  • Don't run two chat widgets at once. Besides confusing shoppers, each one adds its own download weight and JavaScript cost on top of the other.

Where Chatbait fits

Chatbait's install script is one line, added as an app embed or a pasted script (see how to add an AI chatbot to your Shopify store), and Chatbait's AI agent loads after your page content rather than blocking it, the same async pattern behind the widgets above that didn't delay initial render. We haven't run our own Lighthouse comparison against the tools in DebugBear's test, so we won't claim a specific number here. If page speed is a real concern for your store, run the before-and-after test yourself; it takes a few minutes and tells you exactly what you're trading for the chat bubble.

Frequently asked questions

Will adding a chat widget hurt my Shopify SEO?

Not meaningfully, if the widget loads asynchronously, which most do. Google's ranking signals care about Core Web Vitals (loading, interactivity, layout stability), and the widgets tested by DebugBear mostly didn't delay a page's main content from rendering. A heavy, badly built widget could still add enough weight to nudge your mobile score down, so test it rather than assume.

Which chat widget is the lightest?

In DebugBear's test, Zoho Desk had the smallest download size at 67 KB, with LiveAgent close behind at 79 KB. Tawk.to was the heaviest of the widgets with full numbers, at about 749 KB, mostly from a single 500 KB SVG image. Sizes can change as vendors update their code, so treat this as a snapshot, not a permanent ranking.

How do I check if a chat widget is slowing down my store?

Run your product and homepage through PageSpeed Insights or Chrome DevTools' Lighthouse panel before adding the widget, note the scores, then run it again after. The difference, not the absolute number, tells you what the widget actually cost you.

Does Chatbait publish its own speed benchmark?

Not yet. Its script loads asynchronously, the same loading pattern behind the widgets in DebugBear's test that didn't block page render, but we haven't run a Lighthouse comparison against other tools and won't claim a number we haven't measured.
